In an online appeal to sign a petition, Lok Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has demanded from Finance minister Arun Jaitley to make sanitary napkins tax free under the new GST regime. The GST bill is likely to be  Congress MP from Assam has urged people through change.org to support her  in this regard. In her plea, the Dev said ,”Condoms and contraception are tax free in India, but the sanitary napkins used by millions of women are not.  Women have to use sanitary napkins every month. They are a necessity not a luxury. Taxing sanitary napkins is like taxing women for being women. “

 
However, Dev said,” If condoms and contraception are tax-free to promote their use for health reasons, so should sanitary napkins”. MP further said, “ the upcoming GST bill is our key opportunity to make this happen. Sign my petition and the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to make sanitary napkins tax free under the new GST regime”.  The deadline for introducing GST is July 1 for which parliament must pass three bills, which spell out the operational details of the new tax, before its current session concludes on April 11.
