Even as the latest nutrition survey found the condition of adolescents in the category of thin, obese or abdominal obesity, an NGO in Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu has taken a unique initiative to provide protein rich snacks to government school children in the morning. While health experts and nutritionists remain busy analyzing the findings of the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS), the efforts of the NGO has given a ray of hope to those concerned with the nutrition level of children.

The Trust, Ini Oru Vidhi Seivom, launched the innovative idea from the Panchayat Union Middle School, Periyar Colony. Their target group is students between Class I and Class VIII. According to NGO founder Kavitha Jenarthanan, nearly 110 students were given boiled pulses (sundal in Tamil) and dry grapes.

Kavitha Jenarthanan said that students now prefer to come to schools as early as 8.30 in the morning although the food is served at 12. 30pm. Her effort has given a ray of hope to check malnutrition and  drop out rate students.
