Grand old Communist leader from Telangana Mallu Swarajyam passed away due to multiple organ failure at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Saturday. Ninety one year old Swarajyam had been ailing for some time. Political parties, cutting across the party lines paid rich tributes to the veteran communist leader. Women activists from across the country, sent condolence messages to her family.

Former MLA and veteran communist leader Mallu Swarajyam was suffering from lungs infection. She underwent medical treatment in a private hospital at Hyderabad. She  was admitted in a hospital at Hyderabad on March 2. She was a two term MLAs in 1978 and 1983 in united Andhra Pradesh from Thungathurthy Assembly constituency. Swarajyam had a humble background. Born into a semi-feudal family in Suryapet district in 1931, she got attracted towards communism when she was a child.

She became active at the age of 11 and took part in movement of Andhra Mahasabha to end bonded labour. She had emerged as commander of a dalam fighting against Zamindars and carried a prize of Rs.10,000 for her head during that time. Known for fiery speeches, she wrote a song “Vooyyallo” in which she praised martyrs of Telangana armed struggle. That song really inspired several people to participate in the fight against Zamindars and razakars during Nizam rule. Swarajyam, at the age of 16 years, had picked up gun to fight against land lords. She was sister of former MP and leader of Telangana armged struggle late Bheemreddy Narsimha Reddy. The final rites of Mallu Swarajyam would be conducted at Nalgonda after placing her mortal remains in CPI(M) office for public view.
